Conferences are enjoyable. Conferences are an important element in the life of any developer. Conferences keep you informed about interesting topics. But why search externally, when one can find jewels internally – experts who regularly share their knowledge at conferences away from AOE? Why drive many miles to listen to a colleague who sits ten meters away at work? The idea of an in-house AOE Conference seemed logical.
At AOE we hold an “Open Friday” every six months. We use this Open Space Event to discuss new ideas and improvements for AOE and our daily work. The idea of having an “internal conference” generated great enthusiasm when it was introduced during our Open Friday at the end of 2015 and was met with resounding approval from the AOE employees.
On Thursday, April 21, 2016 the first AOE Conference will take place in Wiesbaden.
An organizing committee is taking care of the AOE Conference and is tasked with creating a suitable format for the event. Of course, we can’t keep up with the big players in the industry. Yet. So we’ll start small.
The intended format for the first AOE Conference in Wiesbaden is:
Every AOE developer should become involved in the developer’s conference, either as speaker or attendee.
Initially, the AOE Conference will be an internal event, but it is conceivable that the conference will be opened to external developers in the future. To test the concept, several developers from meinestadt.de will be our guests for the first conference.
The following topics have been selected:
Above all else the event should be fun and reflect a genuine enthusiasm for technology. Know-how transfer, an inquisitive spirit, knowledge; I think these are all elements of what constitutes a developer’s life – and are actively lived and fostered by AOE.
Naturally, the company also benefits from the conference. The dev background noise should deliver impulses that will achieve an echo in the individual teams.
This, however, is more of a side effect. And this is precisely the difference between the conference and professional training. The primary goal is the free exchange of ideas among the employees. Additional impact is gained during project work through the transfer of knowledge as well as an avid interest in new and exciting technology.
AOE developers will present themselves as thought leaders who inspire or simply share their gusto for and interest in technology with others.
I would like to give huge kudos to AOE. We have complete freedom in how we create and run the conference and Product Owners as well as Scrum Masters are also enabling us by giving us the latitude so we can shape the event as we see fit.
As an aside I would like to mention that there are no prior specifications or objections from AOE, quite the contrary.
The embodiment of any conference are badges. Every AOE developer proudly displays their badge here at AOE. We couldn’t do the AOE Conference 2016 without them.
