The problem is well-known: hungry green pigs have stolen the eggs from a flock of brightly-colored birds. To get the eggs back, the birds catapult themselves at the pigs’ hideouts. A lesser known fact is that the Angry Birds, of the eponymous addictive smart phone app, are also available as a PC game and in a large variety of stuffed animals and accessories. Commissioned by Finnish entertainment media company Rovio, AOE implemented the new Angry Birds web shop in the Amazon cloud using the Enterprise version of the Magento E-Commerce solution. The online shop, which is hosted in the Amazon cloud, is available on all continents and supports country-specific currencies.
Rovio Entertainment Ltd. was looking for a flexible online shop system that is capable of growing with the company’s needs. The company chose AOE, an international Magento Enterprise Partner with extensive experience in E-Commerce solutions and performance optimization. One of the challenges for AOE was hosting and handling quickly growing user volumes. Over one billion downloads of the app have made Angry Birds an absolute bestseller. Each new version of the game creates massive peaks in portal traffic.
AOE implemented the hosting of the Magento web shop with the world’s highest traffic volume in the Amazon AWS cloud. The advantage: The Rovio web shop scales automatically – if usage increases, new servers are brought online in seconds and are ready to accept orders within just a few minutes. Rovio is therefore one of the first Magento Enterprise shops to utilize 100% automated scaling. Highly optimized caching with a hit rate of more than 98% enables the store to easily handle millions of unique visitors per day at very low hosting costs.
- The new Angry Birds web shop is integrated with four third-party systems: Braintree handles payment, while Shipwire does stocking and shipping. Thanks to the Shipwire implementation, the E-Commerce shop “knows” the stock in each location around the world, as well as the restocking and shipping times. The third system is a digital rights management server. In addition, a separate mail service ensures the stable distribution of thousands of confirmation e-mails
- Specials and promotions can be updated in Magento and personalized for different user groups; the system recognizes the output device and shows the appropriate content. During campaign periods Magento generates gift card codes for printing and sale by sales partners
