TYPO3 CMS 6.0 – Back to the future
TYPO3 6.0 lays the foundation for the future of the Open Souce CMS
With its numerous preinstalled extensions, the enterprise web content management system TYPO3 is the perfect system for global companies to design and manage state-of-the-art web portals and -applications. Source code and features were extensively updated in the current version starting with TYPO3 6.0 and adapted to today’s business requirements.
The most important Innovations of TYPO3 6.0 at a Glance:
File Abstraction Layer (FAL) and Cloud Storage
In addition to the integration of local web server files into websites, the “File Abstraction Layer” (FAL) allows the integration of files into TYPO3 onto websites from cloud storage solutions, such as Amazon S3 or Dropbox. This helps companies dramatically reduce their IT-complexity. Files that are used multiple times are no longer copied but only referenced. Meta-information, such as captions, is then automatically updated by referencing wherever it is used.
The extension manager has been completely overhauled, based on the MVC framework Extbase. Extensions can now be integrated and managed in the CMS more easily than ever before. Thanks to a newly-developed language module, new language versions can be efficiently integrated into the new system.
Improved Code Quality
Code quality of TYPO3 6.0 is noticeably improved. To this end the code was simplified, modernized and made more robust. New QA-guidelines of the Association ensure that the high standard of quality is maintained. For example, some 5,000 automatic unit tests were executed for every edit.
With the introduction of namespaces TYPO3 6.0 utilizes current development standards. Because of refactoring and adjustments to the previous code, the new namespaces mandatorily require PHP 5.3. The structure of all code classes is thus significantly improved. At the same time it is ensured that all third-party extensions will continue to be supported. The basic code in the new TYPO3 CMS more closely resembles the structure of Flow and Neos, which simplifies interoperability between the systems.
